We're beginning research on purchasing a new (5-pod rotary) rough mower. We have an old Ransome AR-250 which has served us well, but availability on these is likely limited now. We're currently looking at Toro 4500D & Jake AR-5's.
Any experiences & opinions you guys have with these, or other units, to help here would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I posted this in ShopTalk, but thought I'd try here as well.
We're beginning research on rough mowers for a spring purchase. We have a Ransome AR-250 which is getting long in the tooth & needs to at least rest, if not retire.

Our 4500 is my favorite machine in the shed. Its at 3800 hours and runs like the day it was new. I service the blades weekly or as needed, as well as grease it good and any other PM and it just runs every day. I did have to put a head gasket in it a month ago, but that may have been lack of good radiator cleaning in it's past. I would definitely look into the reversing self cleaning fan setup.

We like our 5 year old 4500. The only work outside of PM is a couple rear rollers and the fan clutch. Cutting quality is great.

Toro 4500 D is the best mower I've ever rode and I too am getting long in the tooth.

They will both cut grass. Buy the one from the dealer with the best service. For us, that's Toro.

The Toro 4500's are great machines, very productive, easy to maintain. Currently here after the 4500 and 4700's got to this course the Ar 250's just sat. We just sold them about a month ago.

We bought a 1600 T two years ago, the thing is a fuel hog, over 2 gallons, averages about 2.3 gallons an hour.

You should look into the Lastec Articulator 4520 120'' cut. Awesome machine.... great quality of cut at high speeds. We got to demo this machine for a few days and was so impressed with the things we could do with it. ex: mowing steep banks. We have a 4500 right now and this machine blows it out of the water!

The AR-5 doesn't compare in anyway shape form or fashion to the 4500!!

We purchased a Lastec 4520 this spring after an impressive demo. We are pushing 400hrs on the unit, and feel we have a good understanding of it's capabilites and limitations so I'll share my thoughts. Productivity and fuel economy are literally off the charts, when compared to the competition. I can cover my entire property in 17-19hrs compared to nearly 24 with our 4500D or the old 455D. Fuel consumption is comparitively lower, which is a huge selling point. We have also eliminated a TON of sidewinder hours, due to the contour following capabilites we no longer need to trim around tees or mounds. I would estimate sidewinder is down from 12-14 hrs weekly to 6 at the most. Quality of cut is terrific in dry conditions, but there is some clumping in wet/high turf. I still send the 4500D out if we get behind, it seems to do a better job of dispursing clumps and lines of heavy clippings. This has only happened twice all season so it's not a huge concern. We also were able to lower the HOC slightly (2.5 before 2.25 now) becasue of the contour deck, which is always a crowd pleaser.

The only downsides we have encoutered were minor an/or covered by warranty. We were shredding belts the first 100hrs, but it was a poorly installed discharge chute hitting the belt, simple fix. We also lost a rear drive motor and a throttle cable, which is concerning, but was covered fully by warranty. Parts were slightly slow to arrive both times, but our distributor was helpful and made it right. Only other complaint is that 9hrs on any ZTR type mower is alot for any operator, and my operator says his arms/back get a little tired. Overall, this machine is a real game changer in my opinion. I'm very pleased with it so far!

Just bought a Toro 4000D last week. We have been running three Lastec 721xr articulators for years. They serve us well, but we have been sticking to much money into them in parts lately. We demoed all the mowers listed above, but the 4000 blew the rest out of the water for me. The ability to use the mower for rough and then fold up a deck or two to get in tight places is amazing, and the operator comfort was the best of all the machines. Leaf mulch kit works really good too.
