We have had continuing problems with our PR400 radios damaged from rain/irrigation. We're looking for some type of case or holster to help prevent the liquid damage to the keypads with no luck at all on finding anything even close to what we were thinking about. It needs to be something that protects the keypad but still allows the radio to function normal without having to take it out of the case. Does anyone have any good solutions or recommendations for protecting these costly radios? Or does anyone know of a vendor who produces a case like what we were thinking about?

    Any help is appreciated.

We have the same radios, and the same problems. I've given up trying to protect them and will be purchasing new higher IP rated units that are submersible. They are more expensive but replacing 3 or 4 PR 400's each year due to water damage adds up.

I had a PR400 and had the same problems. Since it was a heavy radio, I had a tendency to drop and crack. I did have a DURUS case for the radio that did work O.K., but we replaced it with a Vertex Standard from Lightning Wireless. Radios for Golf also have these same radios. I am much happier with the Vertex Standard versus the problems with the PR400.

We used to use Motorola radios for several years, but we just recently switched to the vertex standard vx- 459 handheld radio which is waterproof and can be submersed up to 3 feet for 30 min and still be fine. It also comes with a 3 year warranty.

    Charles,

What is your opinion on the size of the buttons on the vx-459's? Do you use your radio to control irrigation, they seem small and close together which would seem to be a hassle trying to punch in codes all day. Thanks in advance.

    James,

I purchased a VX-459 for voice and irrigation use. I loved the smaller size of the radio, and power seemed to be sufficient. However, after using it for a short time I realized a couple of vital functions were missing. I sent it back to have it reprogrammed to receive a response tone from the controller and to allow for redial by hitting a single button. After a couple of days, my distributor informed me that these functions were not possible with this radio. Without these capabilities, this radio is a non-starter for us. Never had this issue with my Motorolas or Kenwoods.

I just filled out a purchase order for two VX 459 and two VX231(non keypad) for my staff, the cost seemed too good to be true but for that price I figured it was worth a try if for nothing but my hot water guys and interns to have communication with myself and assistant
