I've never really had mole problems............until this course. What are some good controls?

Keith had the best ideas, but the all time best is a beer, chair and shotgun feels so good. Some areas not pratical is all. too bad when you can't

Victor Out O Sight mole trap, Talpirid, or a flat shovel and a pitchfork. With the shovel and pitchfork method flatten down the runs first thing in the morning and then go back by later. Watch where the runs have been pushed back up and watch the ends to find movement. Flat shovel behind them and pitchfork til you see blood! :)

These are what we use at our course.

I have also heard that you can put bubble gum in their tunnel and they will eat it. They cannot digest it and it kills them, like I said though that is one of the local tales. Good luck, I hate them!

I've never tried the pitchfork method, but I just took a pesticide recertification class the other day and learned that moles can travel through their tunnels at 1.3 feet per second.

Take your hydroject over the tunnels early in the morning. We have had good results in the past.

thus the flat shovel behind them to keep them from escaping into the run. :)

Biological controls such as an owl box (9x9x9 and a 4" Hole) posted in trees and on top of high poles can attract some protection. Properly timed applications of Bacillus products can help reduce the larvae (mole diet) population.

    1.3 feet/sec only equals .88 MPH

Well then, I say try to catch 'em alive and teach 'em how to push a walking greensmower!

I already tried to teach 'em how to push a walking greens-mower Bowman. However, I was told that it was a inhumane act and it was considered cruelty to animals!

Not only inhumane and cruel, but the SEIU local would probably set up a picket line out front, too.

Moth balls using a soil probe to apply them works for me. I have also sprayed Tilex in the holes. As long as you scare them away thats good and they go to a new area. I currently have them on a green....or did anyway.

Just wondering what some of you guys are doing for mole/gopher control on your golf course? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

    Larry,

Talpirid will smoke moles. Put 1 worm in a run and watch them begin to die. Last year I found a dead mole in a run after consuming Talpirid. They do work! It might take a couple of tries if there are several moles active in one run. Hope this helps. Have a great 2012!

Talpirid. 1-2 worms in a tunnel and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

Has anyone seen issues with the generic Talpirid? Or has anyone seen some resistance to it? We use the TomCat brand and at times it has seem to work ok, but we are having problem areas. Or could it be the population is much larger then we are guessing?

    Thanks, Mel

My guess is you are underestimating population. TomCat and Talprid use the same active ingredient, Bromethalin .025%, and doing a search provided no instances of Bromethalin resistance in any of its uses.

    Thanks Keith,

We have included the harpoon traps in with our worms. Probably alot more moles then we are imagining.

To add to the discussion: I use all of the above, with the exception of the harpoon traps. I have much greater success with the Nash Choker Loop traps. I like seeing dead bodies every now and then and the choker style traps work better for me in my soil.

One of the classes I took last year at national stated that moles are very territorial. If you have an area that has multiple runs it is most likely that it is only one mole. They said if you put two moles in a bucket they would kill each other. Food for thought. I also have had great success with Talprid.
