Has anyone used a tow type Dakota 410 to spread Milorganite on putting surfaces?

Years ago I used the Ty-Crop for fairway applications. That was back in the day when I believed a dormant application made a difference. Now I don't, so I don't, so to speak.

I'm from Minnesota and I'm just wondering if anyone uses milorganite for there first and last fertilizer apps of the year. Also does anyone know the price of greens grade milorganite fertilizer??

    David,
I put down a one pound nitrogen per thousand application in late December on my greens. I feel it helps in spring green up, and being organic I don't worry about any flush growth if the temps warm up in during the winter. In the past I have used it a couple times in late spring/early summer at half pound rates. I think I paid about $16-17 per bag for greens grade.

I put it down after I put down my heavy topdressing before winter. The black color of the milorganite does a wonderful job on ice melt during sunny days because it floats up into the water prior to freezing.
I pay around $11-$12 per bags for the GG
I don't go into winter without it, just make sure your fungicide applications are adequate because the pink snow mold pathogen loves to use it as a fuel source.

Just a question, I can understand there are more reasons to use it beside the nutrient feeding aspect, but isn't the nitrogen break down from Milorganite under microbial action? Are there microbes available to breakdown the nitrogen at that time of the year?

I understand it's been used spring and fall for many many years and people see good spring green-up with it, is that a response from the iron? Or does the response from the iron trigger some other form of nitrogen in the soil into releasing for the response?

I seems the longer I've been out of school the more I forget about fertilization.

This won't apply to you in Minnesota but out here in SoCal the kikuyugrass loves the stuff. Nice slow N and plenty of Fe. We use it in fall to delay potential dormancy and enhance spring wake up.

We apply milorganite on fairways at 3/4# N per thousand in September for fall and spring color and apply to greens at 1.5# N per thousand after we apply a winter topdressing. It can move around in heavy rains but most of it stays put and works in over winter to provide N for mid to late spring when the soil warms.

Last year we paid $149.26 per thousand pound mini bulk bag for greens grade.
