I recently had both of my 50hp Marathon motors burn out withinn 3 weeks or each other and we are currently running on my 25hp jockey pump.

We have been researching these motors since they apparantly have stopped making them. One of them had been rewound about 8-10 years ago.

Does anyone have any experience with these motors?

If you have had problems what solution have you come across?

My problem seems to be that my board is allowing members that work in the plants try to come up with a fix and they seem to be looking for the cheapest solution and not necessarily the long-term solution.

Has anyone rebuilt their motors and if so how have they faired?

I have had motors rebuilt quite successfully a number of times. It can save you lots of money and chances are all they need are to be rewound. I would definitely take to a motor shop and have them look em over and give you an estimate. I had our 25 hp high speed done at the first of the year for around $1000. Count on it going another 10-15 years.

Had two of my 50 hp. motors rebuilt/rewound this year. Rebuilding should cost you approx. 70% of a new one.

I have quotes on a new motor for between $3900 and $4200 and so far possibly rebuilding them for around $1500 each so far.

Thanks for the input. first hand experience is the best info you can get.

I just wanted to update everyone on what we found out.

Well we are told one of the motors got hit by lightning and the other had a balancing weight come off and tear up the windings.

Both are being rebuilt for $2900 cash (we got a $300 savings by paying cash instead of net 30)

We ordered two soft starters off of ebay for $1400 each with a 6 month warranty.
