I am considering making compost for my flowerbeds. Is anyone out there doing this at their facilities? What are you mixing together to make your compost? I was thinking about wood chips from our chipper and greens mower clippings. Any thoughts would be great.

We use grass clippings, leaves, trimmings from flowers and shrubs, pretty much everything organic we collect from the golf course. In addition the kitchen donates their organic waste - coffee grounds, vegetable matter etc. We don't put in meat scraps and such as we don't want the neighborhood dogs, rats etc making a mess of things.

We have a good number of Sugar Palms and use the fallen palm fronds as a base for the compost piles. I think it provides some aeration to the bottom of the pile and by the time the compost is ready the fronds have deteriorated to compost also.

We have been doing this for several years now and use the compost when we redo landscape beds and when planting trees.

    Cheers.
