I am sure this has been brought up before but I need to ask:

Is there anyone out there who has a certain/specific shoe requirement for their maintenance staff? If so can you tell me what it is and why? Where are you getting them? How is it working? Do you pay for them? Has it cut down on slip or fall injuries?

In the research mode as to what is out there and what is going to be best for our staff and golf course. Dealing with severe slopes around greens and tee complexes.

    Jon,

Our staff are just required to wear OSHA approved shoes with steel toes, no specific brand is specified. We don't have a lot of hills and slopes so slipping isn't a major concern here. Anyone in the City who has this requirement is given an annual shoe allowance of $225 which they receive in their check each July. No compliance issues in all the years I have been here.

    Jon,
We have a similar policy as Gary. We have a contract with a local shoe store, Redwings, and all maintenance staff is required to wear OSHA approved steel toe boots. Each staff member gets $180 per year to purchase the boots. We simply send a list to the store of employees who will be purchasing the boots, along with the amount that each employee has to spend, and then the store invoices us. If an employee wants boots that are more then the $180 it comes out of their pocket. We can track the purchase and ensure that proper boots were purchased.

We require only walkmowing to wear shoes or "overalls," no heals on shortgrass surfaces. Otherwise, there are no requirements.

Hey with those requirements, you might be able to recruit some staff from around here, they like wearing overalls and not wearing shoes.

Actually here, which surprises me with us being a city, we have no formal policy that I'm aware of. I have all my staff wear closed footwear, and encourage them to wear steel toe shoes. I encourage them to pick something not aggressive. Some FTE staff do get a clothing allowance plus we buy them pants and shirts, (I don't know why us supervisors don't get it, I guess were not suppose to be working?) so in theory they can use that $100 to buy boots.

Similar to the above responses. The city pays up to $115 for hard toe boots or shoes. The employee can buy them anywhere they want. They have to provide the receipt and the something off the shoe box(barcode and description) to show they purchased safety shoes. They are only reimbursed the amount paid for the shoes up to $115.

Guys thank you all for your responses. Those of you who require a OSHA shoe do you have this in a written policy? Can you send it to me at jmaddern@pgawest.com.

    Thank you all again.
