What would you experienced native growers suggest for cutting of these areas each year? We are turning 20+ acres in San Diego (Carlton Oaks) to native and wondering if it should be cut down in Spring? Or does Fall make more sense? Fortunately we have a great looking fescue-type that comes up all over the place (that I still need to positively identify!) now that we aren't mowing these areas...looks great from a distance and browns out in summer yet is thin enough to find your ball and even hit out of.

    Geoffrey,

We mow ours in the fall because we have winter and snow that would mat everything down. Also our falls tend to be dryer than our springs allowing a better mowing.

Considering you are open all winter if they look good I would leave them until spring but if they start falling over or collect too much fall debris I would mow in fall.

Given our early spring this year we will probably mow them again in a week or so to even everything out and allow us to spray herbicide.
