Have been recently reading up on this topic and was wondering how many of you are doing this. Research says the applications help build carbohydrates reserves and increase winter hardiness. For those of you using this practice have you seen positive results. What timing and rates are u using. Thanks.

University of Wisconsin completed some research a couple years back. If I remember correctly, they discovered the best timing for a late season fert application should be ~ 10 days prior to the first hard frost. They also documented anything over 0.5#N/1000 was wasted. Dormant turf won't adsorb the nutrients as effectively as it is leading into dormancy. Remaining nutrients risk leaching. Spring plant quality and color ratings were not significantly better if N is higher than a 0.5#.

I followed this advice last fall (0.5# Ammon Sulfate), although my application was probably a week after the first hard frost, and the spring color and growth was as good as all prior years. Spring root growth was best I've ever seen.
