I have Penncross greens in so Indiana, and during hot, humid weather they get real soft on top and puff up as I would like to say. From my experience the past 5 years it seems like we always get a period of this in the summer. We do not have access to an aerifier in the middle of summer, but I do vent the top with a pull behind spiker from Tractor Supply, we do this monthly. Some other things I have done to counteract this are, which have been working, follow GDD for primo apps which in turn has cut my fert rates I go out with, .09 on old 2 week default program, .03 now on the weekly program. Trimmit still goes out on 2 week program. We also topdress every 2-3 weeks which has always firmed them back up. Also, I irrigate through our system as little as possible, unless I am watering in chemical or flushing.

    Chase,

Sounds like you are going about the right away. Penn Cross is notorious for getting puffy during the dog days of summer. Grooming has helped us reduce the quantity of leaf tissue and thus the puffy-ness. Additionally, as much as I hate to say it, a higher HOC seems to add to the scalping.

I am in Eastern Illinois with Penncross II on 9 holes...poa / bent mutts on the other 9...

I know the "puffiness" of which you speak, and had experienced it on most bents, but for whatever reason Penncross seems to be the puff master.

I have never verticut so much in a single season. One week verticut, the next topdress. The cooler temps this summer are allowing me to beat everything up a little more. So far the turf loves it, and they always seem to be smooth and fast, so the membership loves it too.

On a side note, we have also been needle tining with a Pro 648 once a month both greens and collars.

Thanks guys! Just wanted to make sure it just wasn't me. This season has been weird to say the least. There was a mishaps with my mechanic setting the reels to .220 when they were supposed to be .120. Of course I was out the later half of that week so they grew and grew. It happened to happen during the hottest spell with high humidity. It was a mess but we came through. I am really liking the GDD tracker and lower N rates. I feel like that is helping quite a bit.
