we just got our irrigation system up and running and discovered several problems with heads coming up. We have toro 850 series heads, and discovered that the solenoid shields were broke and the wires had been cut or nicked. After some investigating we came to the conclusion that our head edger was the culprit. I don't know who makes it but it has teeth like you would find on a sickle bar mower mounted in a ring. The teeth are too long and are catching the solenoid area when the guys are turning it. We suspect that this was not a problem with our old system due to the fact that our heads were all sunken down low enough to be out of range. I am a proponent just using scissors or shears, but just wanted to see what everyone else was using.

We use a weed eater only. You don't need a special head that is dedicated or that has to be changed. Also, if your guy passes by a tree or weed, he can hit that too.

We use the plastic power heads on our weed eaters. We purchase them from Precision USA, and I think you can also get them from R&R.

I use a heavy duty steak knife and do all sprinklers by hand. It looks much cleaner than the weed eater. You'll probably think it takes much longer but It all depends on the crew member doing it. I would put my steak knife against any guy with a weed eater, plus the quality and look is so much better.

Yup, Had the same problem several years ago with our 750's. We just drilled a couple of holes in the top bracket and attached a piece of old 2x4 to act as a stop so they could cut as deep. It just cuts around the edge and can't get to the wires.

The picture shows the head edgers with the wood blocks on the left, the one on the right is for 12" valve boxes.
You may have to replace the wood after a few years but this has worked for us for the last 18 years.
Plus my senior guys appreciate not having to bend down with a knife. We actually just had an oversize version made for our fairway plates which we use as "Cub Tees".
