I was wondering if anyone uses weather vane sprinkler control valves. I have several here and my problem with them is that some leak where the lid meets the body. I have replaced the diaphrams in them hoping that would cure it but no luck. Im not sure if there is anything else that I can do other than replace them.

I have a Rainbird Maxi Stratus II decoder irrigation system. I was wondering that with the price of irrigation heads, specifically rainbird 900's ($225) a piece what are the thoughts with trying other manufacturer?s Besides looking at the pressure, throw and flow of possible replacements will they function properly with the decoders? If anyone has gone this route what sprinkler heads are people liking? Thank you in advance.

You might check out Sportsturf Irrigation. In their new catalog, they are selling non OEM Rainbird casings in half dozen quantities for $52 each. You need to add your own selector, bottom valve, and internal. If you send them any broken bottom valves (older type) or internals they will repair and send back to you for a reasonable price. So you could end up with basically a new head for well under $225. http://www.sportsturfirrigation.com/

I believe the success will have more to do with the solenoid characteristics (inrush, holding) than anything else on another head. Even rainbird recommends against using their DV solenoids on RB decoder controllers.

I'm curious why you'd want to mix head types (think parts inventory, training..), when there are lower-cost alternatives to get rebuilt or aftermarket parts.

Toro Infinity decoder heads are right in the same ball park. I believe Hunter's are as well.

On my Nursery green I have two heads not working, Sta 01 (greens in) and Sta 07 (green out), I have tried all I know to do except run a new common wire which will be done today. Long story short I had a guy replace the head on Sta 07 and after he did that he checked w/ flag key and it worked but he never checked via radio or box, I have replaced solenoid and p-valve, as well as 8 station and 16 station boards in the box. Both of the heads will work via flag key but neither will work via radio or switch at the box, does anyone have any suggestions other that replacing the common?

I would check the connections from the wires to your solenoids. After that start tracing wires. If the heads are next to each other it's probably not very far away from the head. Just figure out what direction the wires go around your green and I'll venture a guess that you'll find it before you get to the next set of heads.

Most likely have a cut common wire or one that is not making good contact.

Come to think of it, I might have tried to shove a screwdriver in the ground and connect a wire from it to the common wire on the silenoid to check for a broken common wire. Its not a fix but may tell you if that is the problem.

Check the ohms on those stations and compare to others for continuity. Most likely cut one or a few wires when digging up the head. It could be station wires or common depending on how things are wired. If all else fails, open up the same hole dug to replace head and carefully enlarge it searching for cut or nicked wires.
