    Hey there folks,

Has anyone heard of/used the product Hydretain? Its a product that claims it isn't a surfactant/wetting agent. Its supposed to create a film in the soil that attracts water vapor/humidity that would otherwise be unavailable to plants and make it available to plants. Ultimately, requiring less water inputs and creating drought resistant plants? Its a blend of hygroscopic and humectant compounds...We've never heard of any product like this.

    Any feedback is much appreciated!

I have used Lesco Moisture Manager, which is Hydretain. We used it on some new landscape plants and saw a positive difference on the plants that had the app vs. those that didn't. I'm going to try it on a sandy fairway I have that stays much drier than the others.

Started using moisture manager sparingly a few years back. Have found it to be an incredible product that works in all kinds of soil types. I use it just about everywhere now--greens, bunker slopes, tees, dry areas in fairways mounds in roughs as well as difficult to water landscape beds around the clubhouse.

We use it in monthly greens application on newer USGA 90/10 soils. Also use it a great deal on high spots and mounds in fairways. Works wonderfully.

    Thanks for the comments guys!

    Andy,

You mention monthly applications on your greens. How long would you say you typically get out of your applications on your other (i assume heavier soil?) areas? We have push up soil based greens here.

    Thanks!

Recommended rates are 3 oz/m every month or 9 oz/m every 3 months. I've found that to be accurate no matter what the soil type.

We apply the granular form, as needed, in our drier areas throughout the course. Typically, this will provide us with about a month of control. Usually that is all we need until the next rain event.

As for greens, it's applied with our foliar applications. But, we also apply Magnus midway to retain moisture in the upper profile. Both products work, that's why we use them.

If you have push-up soils, I'd be looking to move the water out. Our north course is all push-up and in some cases heavy clay, even on the greens. For that we use either Fleet from Harrells or the 5-1-0 with Cascade.

Moisture manger/hydretain is not a wetting agent (although it does contain surfactant to help get it where it is needed) It helps utilize water in the profile better...so you can run things drier. It is just as effective in heavy soils as sandy soils. It does not hold or retain water, it makes the water plant available that normally would not.
