How much sand do you feel is acceptable to leave on bent greens after aeration? Great debate between members here, just need some other opinions to share with them.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

Bury 'em! Just enough grass showing so they survive.

One of the greatest debates ever, in response to aerification and topdressing. It has always been a discussion based on the need of the green. This is based on the greens construction and need for recovery from the aerification. Sand based greens vs soil based greens for instance would require a different response in topdressing amounts. I always liked to refill the holes and cover the turf to defer problems with collection of organic material layers. Many years of agronomic research and different methodology has been tried and developed based on greens construction type or soil vs sand based green for instance. I believe the key is to be consistent in your methodology and to understand why you aerify the green and topdress them when you do so. Too much is when you are collecting sand in the mower and not grass clippings, that too me has always been the bottom line. It sounds kinda simple but never really is as depending on the turf type and greens construction, there are many differences in methodology and timing, for sure. Many methods and answers, none wrong or totally correct, all based on your greens and the conditions found at your site...

I put a lot of sand on the greens at aerification as well as when I run the Graden. How many times a year do you aerify? It is worth the hassle for the membership for the benefit that it gives. I also run the verticutter in the afternoon before my brushes to help work in some of the excess sand during aerification. No harm in giving the sand more more channel to get down into any exisiting organic material that may be below the canopy.
