I am at a golf course in the Midwest and goosegrass in putting greens is a huge issue. Most make split applications of dimension or Anderson's goose crabgrass control. My club has a history of large amounts of goosegrass in their greens. Pre emergent herbicides don't seem to help. Has anyone played with any type of post emerge treatments for goosegrass in bentgrass greens? If so, what where your rates and application frequency? Thanks.

    Jeff,
I am in Louisville, Kentucky and we also have problems with goosegrass. In the past we have used Dimension at the split rates. Maybe make a later dimension app to pick up the goose. Otherwise we hand pull...ug.

We have historically had this same problem and have usually applied split apps of Bensumec, which only gave minor control. This spring we tried Andersons goose/crab and love it! Even after aerification three times, we have very few goosegrass plants. Normally by this time we are ate up and have resorted to hand picking them since that is safest under given weather conditions. It is worth a shot, just be careful on how you apply it since it does contain Oxidiazon. We are located in Knoxville, TN.

Jeff- I have seen on this forum several people who do not have success with Andersons Goose Crab. I'll be darned. That product, 25 years ago (Scotts back then), revolutionized greens in the DC/Baltimore area. All the old clubs had crowfoot problems. We called it Washington Bent. You need to get it out at the high rate, 6# of Ronstar as I recall. It will yellow greens up the first couple of years but I swear the following years it is less of a problem. You can't be too early- grass needs to be growing, or too late - you miss germination. The first year at the high rate you'd swear you killed the greens, yellow as the flagstick, but they recover. Next few years it's not as bad and no crowfoot picking in August. You need the Ronstar, that is the key for Goose.

If Goose is that bad you may need some post emerge help until you bring things under control with Goose/Crab. Pete Dernoeden here at UMD worked with Acclaim Extra back in the 80's. Start in late June before you even see any Goose, every 2 weeks, almost every spray app on greens, with 3.5oz/A of Acclaim Extra. Yes that is 3.5oz per ACRE, not per M. It is hot, not 3oz, not 4oz, I mean 3.5 oz/A. It burns the small plants back until late August and then you can lay off. No Goose germinating that late becomes a problem. This is off label, the Acclaim label still says DO NOT USE ON BENTGRASS PUTTING GREENS. The label says nothing on bent under 1/4".

Goose is rarely a problem here around the beltway any more. The young boys have forgotten all about it. The Goose /Crab product was the key. Say what you want about our football uniforms, but UMD has had a crabgrass study of some sort every year for the past 35 years. We know what you are going through. Good luck. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

    Jeff,

Last year I did the split application of dimension. about 95% control. I applied in early May and Mid June. This season I only was able to get 1 app out in early May and was about 80% controled. This is based on the past amount of goose we had before there was dimension applied. My though is the later the app the better control of goose you will get. I have had to do some handpicking along collars this year and very litte in the actual green, so make sure you do a pass around greens possibly. Call me if youi got anymore questions

1 week ago (September 1) sprayed Illoxan at a 1 oz per 1000 sq ft rate on a Bent grass (007)green that was less than 9 months old with a daytime high of 95 degrees that day. result: no Bent grass lost, 98% percent of the goose is gone so I am reapplying at the same rate today (September 8th) to get the remaining 2 % in a different direction at 78 degrees. I am in Central Arkansas For what it is worth.

I've struggled with it at my course using the 2 split apps of dimension. This year I switched to 3 applications: April 15, May 15, June 15 and have 100% control. Not a single goose or crab plant on even the worst green.

I am using the Dimension Ultra 40WP at .3125lbs or 1 WSP per acre. This gives me a total of .38 lbs/ai per acre

We spray it at 2gal/1000 and water it in 9 mins immediately

Im located in Central/East KY, Poa/Pencross and L-93 on push up greens.

Is this just the perfect year in the south for such a tremendous out break for this dreaded weed. It seems the more Bensmac 4lf that you use (18oz per 1000 per year) the worst my push up greens have gotten. Any and all thoughts are appreciated. Marshall N. Brown Link Hills CC Greeneville Tn

Marshall , I use Andersons goosegrass/crabgrass control in a granular form. 28.8 lb bags around 100.oo per bag on our old push up bentgrass greens l-93, Rates around 2 to 3 lbs/1000. Spread in two directions, I have had very good results with this product, it has benuslide, with oxiadiazon in it. Had 0% goosegrass in our greens this year. There is a lot of goosegrass around some of our greens collars that I was late too put down some ronstar to control it,but I don't know of a better product for bentgrass greens. Be careful to not go over 3/1000 or will get a little burn for a bit,but does not last long. Hope this helps you!

Pylex has a supplemental label for use on bentgrass which unfortunately expires in December. Hopefully it will be reinstated. .25oz/A does a really good job. I think you can spray every two weeks. Very safe on the bent but hell on the goosegrass.

    Marshall,

I'm located in southwest Indiana and manage push-up Green's built in 1962. Thier a mix of Cohansey, Penncross and L-93. I started this job 2 years ago and during interview was told about member led "Goosegrass Parties". Where members would bring their weapon of choice and cut goose out of Green's. The thought still makes me shutter. My first year I had decent success using Bensumec and Anderson Goose and Crab combination I was able to avoid the parties. However this year I started using Acclaim. 4oz/A started end of April and ended late August. I made religious biweekly apps. Let me state that it's not labeled for Bent. With that be said I saw no residual affects and this was a very adverse year for growing bent in our area. With all of that I had almost zero Goosegrass on Green's or collars. It was amazing and you can be assured I'll use it again next year.

    Jeremy,

Curious about your Goose/Crab Control and Bensumec combination. Please share your rates and timing if you don't mind. I also have goosegrass problems on several greens and looking to make an application of bensumec in May to boost my protection late summer. I apply full rate of Goose/Crab in spring and usually see some breakthrough in August.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sam,

I went with full rate of goose/crab late April and split apps of Bensumec in mid April and late May. Much like you I was seeing break through in mid August. This is where I believe Acclaim helped me the most. I never saw late season goose.

Marshall, I put down the Andersons's Goose/Crab control down after we were done aerifying in spring ,about the 1st week of March. I started to see a little goose in some void areas in Sept., but after we aerified in fall I use the same product at a smaller amount 2lb/1000sq ft. Helps keep poa out and also winter weeds.

I agree with Jody....I experimented with lower rates of Pylex as mentioned in my post on this forum about 2-3 months ago, and have used .25/ounce per Acre with great results on tees and fairways------greens I went with .10/ounce Acre-----yes, it comes with a syringe :-)

I don't have the link, but Virginia Tech has done some research on the subject this year. It seems that Tupersan applied weekly at 6 lbs. / Acre or biweekly at 12 lbs. / Acre did an excellent job of controlling both goosegrass and crabgrass. The best part is that it is legal. You should be able to find it on a Google search.
