Okay, I am getting tired of crab grass and especially goose grass here in NJ......I applied Dimension twice already this year in split applications, Late April and four weeks later, both times followed by a half-inch of rainfall, and I am starting to notice small goose and crab tillers in two of my fairways. All nine fairways were aerated in early November 2013 to relieve compaction. It's really bugging me...I made the spray apps myself and didn't miss an inch. What can I use to knock this goose/crab down in it's early stage?

    Thanks

fairways are cut .075 and is mainly tri-rye.....I put the fairways in ten years ago on my par three course because it helped the elder golfers get some good roll toward the greens :-)

Dimension works good on crab but poor on goose. The only product that works great on goose is Ronstar. A firm second is Barricade. You just have to dial in your rates and timing for length of control. I have bermudagrass overseeded with Transitional Ryegrass.

Goose is very sensitive to Illoxan, in the mid south we apply it sparingly into Bent grass greens for control of Goose. Not sure what effect it would have on Rye, my guess is it would hurt the rye

T Storie, what rates are you using on greens? I am dialing in a rate just wondering what others have found successful.

Unless someone comes up with a burn-down herbicide like MSMA trying to control goosegrass and crabgrass is going to become a matter of sodding. The herbicides you have now work within the cellular level of the plant. Not all the plants are susceptible. You are going to have a percentage that survive, and that is going to increase over time.

Weekly light applications of Acclaim at .2 oz will eliminate the goose grass. Once you start spraying, stay on it every week through the summer. If you are seeing small plants now, you will continue to see them all the way until September. As other have stated, Dimension is not very good on goose grass. There are better products for goose grass but they will also hinder divot recovery if you put seed in your divot mix. If you are one of the guys that sweeten their turf every fall with extra rye grass seed, they may also hinder this late season germination. Good luck.

I am in NJ and also have a huge goose problem. However I am very surprised you are seeing goose grass germinate already. I wouldn't think soil temps are higher enough consistently. Are you sure its goose and not something else? What I have done in the past is spray Dimension on my tees in early May then in late May early June spread granular Ronstar G. Then biweekly spray either Acclaim, Solitare or Dismiss, all at low rates. Every once in awhile I will use MSMA at very low rates. I also have two fairways that get cover in Goose grass. This year i went half rate on Barricade in rough, early Dimension and then just applied 21-0-20 with Ronstar. I know, I know over kill. I am positive I will get some root pruning but what the hell. Either I have dead grass from the goose or dead grass from too much herbicide.

I also started punching fairways on a regular basis. One thing I made sure of is that most of my goose plants were dead before I punched. Give me a call if you'd like. Another guy to talk to is Kevin at Pine Barrons.

Tenacity works well with goosegrass control. Turns turf white for a few days but it will clean it up.

I have observed excellent post-emergence control of goosegrass with the new herbicide Pylex(topramezone) released by BASF even at lower-than-label rates of 0.5-0.75 oz/acre. Pylex is an HPPD and will bleach the goosegrass. I've seen it applied to control bermuda in bent at 0.25 oz/acre with some success – may turn bent off color temporarily, but with repeated applications does a surprisingly well job reducing bermuda population.
