To all, I am at a 27 hole private facility in Chicago. 18 of the holes were a 1918 Donald Ross design. We hired Dr. Hurdzan to re-design two of the three nines. We are starting the discussion process of renovating the 3rd nine. Unfortunately the club chose not to re-capture the Ross features in the first two nine hole renovations. That said, can you share positive results and working relationships that you have had recently with golf course architects? I want to gather some names to share with my Chairman and Committee. Thanks in advance for your comments.

I was most impressed with Dan Maples a second generation architect who has been a superintendent owns courses and runs a management company. Dan has Great common sense attitude knows what it takes to maintain what he builds. Most of his work is in the carolinas but if he doesn't work in your area he knows who does. Dan is easy to talk to just to talk turf.

    Morning Tommy,

Have had a great experience recently with Beau Welling Design. They have taken our old Ross course and given it a fresh take while managing to keep some of the original design ideas intact.

You want something different? Mike Devries. Hes been working on a lot of unique, older style courses while his own designs have garnered great reviews. And hes kind of local to Chicago.

Dr. Mike Hurdzan did renovations to our course back in the 80s, and is back with us again for bunker and potential tee renovations. He is a great guy to work with, very professional. When he came out to go over our course, he was always asking for my input from maintenance standpoint, head pro for playability, and Tom Topp of Topp Shape as he is our golf course construction company. He took all of our input and put together and proposed a great plan that we are beginning to do this winter.

We worked with Greg Martin on a project. But I know we have a few local guys that may be worth a look.
Lohman Design (Currently doing Schaumburg Golf Club)
Greg Martin (Arrowhead, recently completed The Preserve at Oak Meadows)
Mike Benkusky (may have spelled that wrong). I believe he is doing some work at St Charles
