It is that great time of year here for the Geese and their lovely droppings. I have had a member inquire about courses he has been to that have a couple Swans in their ponds. Does this actually work to deter the goose population? Any feedback would be appreciated.

It can, however is unreliable. Swans are very territorial, but I have pictures of them swimming side-by-side with geese to no affect. And...what happens when they (the swans) decide to fly away? Better off going with other strategies in my opinion.

    Mike,

I've heard the same thing as Keith. There might be some that work but most guys have commented they join up and become friendly.

Keep them off with dog and bird banger during the season. Only trouble we have is with their night time fly ins until arriving the next day. I'm contemplating get a little motorized remote control boat to help harass as well which some say works well in combo with a dog on the shore.

Dog is the best, Gracie our dog is expert in this and we have no issues with geese here in Chicago Northside, both seasonal and ones that remain all year round stay away! Gracie does the job, she also chases anything else that decides to get in her way! She had a couple incidents with skunks, they lost and she stunk for a couple days, but they were done for good! She loves her job and never misses a beat so to speak. She also likes it when we share our lunch meat with her! She was saved from an animal shelter and inspires us all!

I think dogs work great where you have smaller water features, but they did not work for us. We have also used bird bangers, egg addling, harassment, relocation, etc. These techniques work until the geese get used to them.

You can now get goose depredation permit from the federal wildlife service. These permits allow you to kill up to 50 geese per year on your property (outside of hunting season) if you meet certain conditions. This has worked wonders for us. These permits are subject to local laws, so it may not be an option for everyone.

    Mike,

We bought a few fake swans last winter and tried them out for a few weeks with little luck. However, a homeowner living close to the lake emailed me one day swearing she saw two swans fly in and was concerned about their health since they hardly moved in days. She thought one of them may have swallowed a fishing lure and wanted to call the wildlife and game division to report the injured bird. I told her they were plastic and could not have flown in because we only paid Fed Ex for ground shipping. I haven't heard anything from her since.

    No...

Harass them so they fly to your neighbors property who then would, maybe, not suggesting, just say'n assumes the liability of shooting them all.

We had swans when I was in New Jersey, they really didn't help, but they were also out numbered like 500 to 1.

We would harass them with the bird bangers and eventually one of our superintendents there got a dog. The dog worked great, the bangers did too, only problem was they would come back when schools got out because they would go use the fields the geese had flew to avoiding us.

    Mike,

At a previous club, we used 1/32" nylon string strung across the ponds in a checkerboard pattern. We spaced them out about 4-6 feet from each other and used bunker or sod staples to tie them to the banks. Keeping the string taunt and right on the surface of the water keeps the visibility of the string to a minimum and prevents the Geese from landing or swimming in the pond. Not sure how big your ponds are but seemed to work well for us.

This year we are using the bird bangers, A big ballon with eyes on it, mylar tape, fake coyotes, and a green laser and we are have pretty good luck, my goal is to not let them nest on the course. The green laser in the funnest as they cant get away fast enough when you hit them with it. Currently just using a pen one but ordered a bigger one so it dosent have to be so dark to use. I have seen geese and swans swiming together many times.

There are way too many geese in the video to shoot them it seems to me. Maybe the gun would help scare them away. I was told several years ago that we would have an Egyptian Goose problem in South Florida. At this point they are still a novelty, but they did have offspring last year. We started with three several years ago. We had about thirty last year.

All those geese remind me of my days with Bergen County in NJ

I think one time at one of the courses the state biologist counted 1500 geese.

Had great results with a product called the denier. If you have homeowners nearby you will get complaints, but it does work. http://www.thedenier.com

Geese Police. They interact a dog throughout the dat. It is the intimidation factor of having a dog within the area the geese are staying. We started right after Labor Day and within two weeks there were minimal to no geese. Within the last week I haven't seen any geese throughout the golf course. The Geese police come to the golf course in & out throughout the day. No geese are harmed and the results are great. We know they could possibly come back, but that might be months from now. Their cost runs between 400-500/week.

For the cost of a week or two of the geese police or a little more get your own goose chaser dog! We have one and she takes care of business! Not a goose on site ever! In fact no bad animals even skunks stay low as she has done in a few of those.......yuck. Plus they make a nice take home pet if you like animals.

I have a six month old Catahula(Birdie!). She had her first goose chase two weeks ago and I haven't seen them since! She probably would have chased them to Quebec had I not cut her off! We'll see how the rest of the fall goes.

I got a permit from Fish and Wildlife to bring in 25 dogs for javalia control. The 30 resident geese are down to about 10 and they stay very close to their favourite lake along side the 12th green.

They are quiet and don´t even crap on the green anymore. The 25 dogs come in at night with a registered hunter and do the business. No more pig damage for a week now.

    Saludos Michael

We have 12 ponds and a wetland on our 27 holes and used to have geese every night in the fall and they would be all over the place. For four years we have had very few by -
    1. Chasing them every morning in the fall and chasing them relentlessly in the spring. If they wont get out of the pond we use a bird banger fire cracker but normally we do not need to.
    2. We spread milorganite on every fairway and green bank anyway so we time it when the geese are starting to move heavy in the fall.
    3. We put fishline around every pond, 2 feet up. This has been amazing and I think the number one reason we do not have geese anymore.
    4. We put out coyote decoys and move them every few days.
    5. We put out one scarcrow but I am not sure it does much.

Besides our dog, we have made up plywood cut outs of the dog to put around the course, we added solar powered orange flashing constrcution lights around ponds as well. All need to be moved a few times a week, sometimes daily.
