Recently lost maintenance building and equipment to fire. Now I am looking for a tractor to pull an old Jacobsen 7 gang rough mower. We had an older Massey Ferguson 20C Turf tractor that had a wide stance and sat low to the ground which was great on hills. I am now looking at all my options and needed your input on which tractors that you use or have used in the past to pull these mowers. Also what would be the min. hp needed for this unit. Any and all opinions are appreciated.

    Thanks,

I noticed quite a lot of JAC G-20 tractors available on the used market a few months ago. This is the same as your Massey tractor. If you are looking for a new tractor, anything over 25HP should work for this application. You may also want to talk with Toro or R&R and ask for their recommendations since they still make the gang mowers.

I used a Kubota 3240 before selling the gang and going to rotary mowers.

Samuel, I have used ground driven pull gang mowers my entire career in golf course management (40+ years) primarily in roughs and green and tee surrounds. Currently we are using 2 Kubuta tractors with each +_ 50hp. One is 4WD which is used on slopes/ grades requiring the power and traction needed in those situations. The other is 2WD which is used on flatter areas where the extra traction is not needed. We are using 7 gang Toro reelmaster units which are probably similar to the Jacobsen pull gangs. As long as they are sharp they do a great job and can be rebuilt year after year no matter who builds the product!

We still run four Toro Spartan and Reelmasters here for rough. All are pulled with 40hp tractors. If I had to buy another one, I would get something a little larger that can be used for other tasks as well.

Since your tractors will generally outlast your gangs I would go with a minimum or 40hp preferably a 50hp so you can also use it on other things during the slower growing months. We use ours to pull our large course vac and our dump trailer whe we are doing tree trimming.
