I've been having some trouble with faults on our pump station skid. The flowtronex panel is telling me "inverter fault", while the ABB VFD is saying there is a short circuit.

I had an electrician out and we went through the panel and he feels comfortable saying all the starting contactors, motors themselves, and wiring is good operable condition, leaving the VFD itself as a possible problem. While talking to our certified flowtronex dealer, I've done some things with his recomendations, but am still recieving the same series of events and an eventual hard fault on our panel from time to time. His general feeling is there is an issue with the windings of one of the pump's motors.

Through anyones experience, what do you surmise is the problem could be, and what should I be looking for when a fault does occur. Everytime I reset the panel and check all the continuity of wires, resistance on fuses, and finally voltage measurements coming through the system once turned back on, there seems to be no issue in my mind in the panel itself. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

We have diagnosed similar issues with motors going out giving us hard faults. When we suspect it we turn off all the motors but one and pull up heads to run it at capacity for 10-15 minutes. Then cycle to the next on down the line. If it is a motor fault, this has always worked for us.

Good luck! Bad time of year to be without water

No lie on the pump station issues for bad timing. I've done what you've suggested, and the inconsistancies of the faults is driving myself, our certified vendor rep, and the electrical outfit I've been dealing with locally. Now its just a matter of waiting to hear back from flowtronex to see what they have to say as well. I sure hope its something simple,

Was getting an inverter fault from time to time last fall but would always start up. Happened again a couple weeks ago to the point the pump would kick on and immediately shut down. I turned down the working voltage from 490 to 480 and it hasn't faulted since. Its the small dial inside the panel. At least that's what I think it does...anyways it fixed our problem. Not sure that it will help but worth a look.

    Chris,

Do you choose to go with Brad over MTI's Jeff Yates on this stuff? I've been working with Jeff pretty regularily, and I'm going to have him here in about 10-14 days it sounds like. I worked with Brad a bit in the past, and he's pretty good. Thanks, and if you could send me his number. my email directly is kylef@medora.com
