We have used rope and stakes to control golf cart traffic for a long time. Obviously the ropes are a pain for the rough mowers and unsightly when not stretched and straight. I was thinking of trying to implement an enter/exit sign along the paths that I can move daily to spread out the traffic. If anyone has done this I would like to hear some pros and cons of doing it this way. Pictures of your signs would be great as well.

    Thanks,

We use rope and stakes along with cart traffic signs. As you know, this only helps keep about 60% of people out of these areas. In our situation (public muni) we HAVE to use rope to keep people out of certain areas. However, if your clientele' generally follows the rules I could see this being a very good solution to eliminate ropes.

We have made signs using 1x8 boards. We router our signage out, paint, stain and seal. We take two large galvanized nails and hammer them in the bottom for spikes. They are easy to move and are much more durable than what standard/par aid offers relative to price. Plus, it adds a bit of character.

We have also utilized sleeves to insert and remove larger signs attached to 4x4 posts. As long as you maintain the signs in the off-season they will last.

Lastly, we have tried the "white lin" method in front of greens. It works early on, but people tend to ignore it as the season progresses.

I was posed this same question a few months ago by the membership. We concluded to not use them for the following reasons:

    1. Enter signs force people to enter in the same spot actually causing increased traffic. For instance, if the enter signs are 150 yards from the green, but someones ball is only 50 yards, they now drive 100 yards down the fairway to get to it. Same with the opposite direction.

    2. Although communication at first is troublesome, most of the courses I talked to that use them said the members eventually follow the rules. However, any outside play has no clue what to do and still does whatever they want.

    3. Even at private clubs, there are a still a good handful of golfers that don't follow directions no matter what.

    4. With no penalty system in place for not following the rules, nothing works. If they aren't following them now because of no repercussions, why would they follow something new?
