Good afternoon all. I have a question to pose for everyone. Paint vs the plastic insert for creating the white appearance above the cup?

I've used both, and I have positive and negative feelings both ways.

Paint: Edge stays a little softer, and its what they use on TV. My negative feelings towards paint is that it really doesn't protect the edge (we all know the guys that scour the ball from the cup with a putter and wreck everything), if someone isn't careful, it can create a mess, and I've felt the edge doesn't heal as quickly. It's also more time consuming to paint and requires more crap to carry around when rushing to stay ahead of play.

Insert: It's even when applied, holds the edge of the hole throughout the day, and the plug is much easier to seem back and make non-noticeable. Negatives would be a tacky appearance, they chip from the lazy golfer's putter evacuation technique, and one has to be super careful to set the cup deep enough to get the ring down that 1/8th of an inch or so to not cause a put to lip or rim away.

This was brought up recently when discussing one vs the other and a comment was made that the insert might have caused someone to miss a putt. I don't play daily, but have never noticed interference either way. Are there versions of the rings that are better than others? Maybe I'm using the wrong paint from the wrong vendor (paraide hole 360 or whatever its called). What are the rest of your thoughts?

    Kyle,
We use the rings and once people get used to them I have very few complaints.
I play a little golf and the least of my worries is that ring.
We go through about 5 sets per year which does get expensive.
We used to paint for main events but after a couple of groups it looked lousy in my opinion.

I had a friend use the rings for the first time for his Member/Guest last weekend. He wanted to do a little something special for the event. A 9:00 shotgun, ProShop called him at home around 11:00 to come remove the "damn" things. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

I don't think the rings conform to the rules of golf. I have played courses that use them and have found them upside down on occasion making the hole smaller.

I get the removal, but what was the reasoning? Were they not set deep enough?

Like one of the above comments was made, if our patrons are going to lazily smash the edge of the cup with a putter, and it chips or dents or in any way comprimises the edge of the cup or the paint, is it the right product. I'd like to tell the ones that are complaining to watch the pros on tour and tell me how many of them don't bend over to pick up their ball? How many of them are throwing the stick back into the cup without paying attention? How many of them aren't fixing ball marks when they know they tagged the green? This is turning bitter again.

We had the rings for about 6 months after the course opened. We assumed the greens weren't firm enough to hold the edges in place. Had enough complaints about balls kicking out that we pulled them. Two other renovations later where we did not use them and haven't had any issues since. Just stick with paint now and have no problems.

My understanding is they are not legal in golf. I saw an interest Twitter once where an incoming shot wedged itself between the ring and the turf surrounding the hole. It was unplayable

We use paint with the E-Zee White system. My guys find it easier to use. I am happier with the job they do using this type of paint and the spinner to paint the cup edge. If anyone wants several of the 360 type they can have our old ones.
