Concrete cart path question...

Wanted to get some feedback on a small cart path job that was coordinated by my club VP and Greens Chairman.

We had (they just finished today...) one section of what appeared to be porous asphalt that was well worn (course is 40 years old...). They decided to put 3" of 3,000PSI concrete over the top of the old asphalt... continuous pour, with saw cuts to 3/4" deep every 8', or so...

I've found info with a Google search that ran the gamut... saw where Gary Grigg had 6" paths done in Kansas years ago (like the method, btw...)... but 4" seemed to be the minimum (using fiber mesh)...

What can I expect from this low-budget method?

Have never overlaid concrete on top of ashpalt before but thoughts are with your location if might possibly work. My concern is 3" is not that much, another inch and I think you could live with the results. If that was done in Louisiana it would be a total disaster shortly after completion with the constant shifting and settling of our soil. But in Arizona, keep your fingers crossed it might be a low budget fix. Again though 3" is marginal at best. I think you quite possibly will see the edges as your area of concern. Keep us posted as to the results.

    Alan,

We did new paths last year 4' concrete with filter fabric mesh on compacted base which in places was the asphalt grindings from the old paths. My guess would be that 3" put on top of the old asphalt path would be ok because it is on a pretty stable base. A lot might depend on what type of soils you are on or if there are any trees nearby. We have clay soils so if the areas near the paths are allowed to wet or dry we could get some cracking of the concrete. I'm guessing that's not the case in Arizona.
