Just wondering how many of you use comp time when you are working longer hours?

    Bwaawaaaahhhhaaaaaaahahaaahaa!!!

Sorry, that was me falling out of my chair. Is anyone in our industry offered comp time?

Like most of us I'm here 50-60hrs a week in the growing season (about 9 months here) and try to make up for it in the slower months. My average week in the off season is closer to 40 and I will occasionally take an afternoon off to recharge.

I am offered Comp time,....and use it. There are many times I am called in outside of working hours. I live 1/2 mile from the course. I am the only employee in GCM that lives on the "island" and can promptly respond to a matters. I work every 3rd weekend, and am on call every weekend and Holiday. Yes,...I use comp time. I have a family and a life outside of my career despite what the Clubhouse thinks. At one time, they supplied me housing here on the island because it was a necessity to have someone nearby.

Since our salaries and I guess duties fall where they do, we do earn comp time. I used to earn our max of 240 hours but as our son has gotten older and when I was helping take care of mom, and that I have good help, I don't earn as much. I also don't count every minute, since I can look back through the day and remember goofing off or something, kind of like now. Plus with our vacation and other time, I have a hard enough time using it. But I don't give my time away either. Our crew member earn it as well, they might get about 80 hours or so a season, we do not earn OT except for an occasional holiday if we don't take one that week, that is usually just me as the other guys will work their holiday into their schedule, I get sent to work to make that little bit extra.

Well I have been at my lub over 17 years now and have not received true raise in about 6 years. I am the only true Manager left at the club and I am constantly called in after I have left for the day and on weekends for the small things that go wrong. While I do not keep track of my comp hours I do try to use up a half day here or there. Everyone on my small crew can earn overtime except myself and I do not give away my personal time free but I do not rape the club over it either. Just wondering if this is normal with some other Superintendents also.

At our muni we our exempt employes technically can accumulate 80 hours of comp time a year but we really do not use it. Between the vacation and holidays it is tough to take that many days off in a year. We do bank our spring/summer holidays and they become just like a vacation day later in the year.

Being seasonal we get a break in winter we work a normal 40 or a little less and we try to keep summers between 50 and 60 hours. It is just part of the job.

Our assistant usually works 9 hour weekdays and 4 hour weekends and takes every other weekend off and I work 10 hour weekdays 8 on Sat and 5 on Sunday. I try to take one weekend day off and one weekday off per two weeks. The golf pro has less days off in season but less responsibility in the winter.

The challenge is perception because the afternoon customers and employes do not understand when you are leaving at 3 you already have 10 hours in and if they see you at 6 pm your on your 13th hour. If I have a evening obligation or meeting I usually take a break when the maint staff leaves and go to the health club or for a bike ride but I live too far from work to justify going home.

    James,

Did not for 30 years+ and now you-bet. I still like everyone get a few hours extra that I never get back but if I can I take it. I have kept a log over the years and every hour on the job has been kept. Back when the weeks were 60+ hours a week, all that time my kids grew up and I missed so much.
Anyway, now I take it off, I can play golf, go to the beach, read, drink whatever I like. I travel all I can, being in Japan and Asia now for 20 years I have seen so much and only old age now to take it away.
