I have 5 yr old Champion greens, which had been neglected up until last year when I took over. I verticut lightly at least 2-3 times a month during the growing season, followed by a medium topdressing. Most times I use a 3-9, 12-6 pattern, then switching to 10-4, 2-8. I plan to be more aggressive this year, and just wanted to hear your thoughts, opinions, ideas, methods, etc. Located in Atlanta area.

    Have you tried circle verticutting?
    Depth?
    How often?
Do you mow behind the verticutter to clean up?

    Thanks

I know Champion and TifEagle are different monsters, but I have my verticutting down to a great pattern on my TifEagle. I go aggressive twice a year with circles and backtrack weekly in the summer. Then every other week I add a third pass through on a Wednesday or Thursday with a brush/double cut.

Pair this with proper topdressing and fertility and you got it made

    TiffEagle loves it

9 year old Champion here. Backtrack double verticut every 14 days at 1/16" below to start the season followed by a bactrack double cut and light topdressing. Backtrack double cut weekly.

Along with the different methods of verticutting, we will circle cut after the verticutting to clean them up even more.

Adam I verticutt every 2 weeks during season at 1/16the of an inch. I back track going northe and southe, theen going east and west thee next week. I find I get more grass going east and west. I also do an aggressive, at an 8the of an inch, verticutt twice a year during aerification.

I really do not get it. Whenever I tried to verticut Champion we just mowed the turf off - period. There are no rhizomes. How are you guys doing this?

No thanks! I do not even like to verticut my perimeters/clean up because of the gaps it leaves and the length of time it takes to heal. I would love to see pictures of someone circle verticutting of even mowing in a circle. I have never done or seen either.

Remind me in August and I'll give you some pics of the process.

The advantage to a circle is that you cover in directions that you would never possibly go with the traditional clock method. The turn of the unit also helps create a slightly larger opening which will eat topdressing material and can really help with thatch control.

I don't know how other guys run their circles, but mine are done just like you would do a bunker. Yes it's aggressive and scars for 1-2 weeks but it is a great tool to pull out a couple times a year.

Give it a try. I was called crazy too....but was copying TPC @ Sawgrass where I got the idea. Works like a champ. We do it about once a month here.

I think you should get your resume ready right before you do that!
