For those with experience on Champion bermuda greens in the transition zone, what are your winter management practices? What are your practices as far as covering/not covering greens? What are your practices as far as winter play with respect to frost, freeze, etc?

    Thanks,

    Cody Elwood

Cody. Im here in East Texas with Champion (18 year old greens). We have never covered these greens. I believe in wateing a couple days before a severe cold spell . If not getting above freezing for a couple day, I will also water them lightly to insulate them. We have done this for years here. Our greens right now are 100% covered. I also believe in sanding the winter months.

I have Champion installed 2007. For me it was the toughest Winter in a long time. We experienced lows of 3 degrees and by weeks end highs of 60. We have covered a total of 30 nights since Thanksgiving, hopefully we are done for the year! I agree with John, don't allow them to dry out. Usually I will water before we cover just to keep a little moisture in them. I raise the HOC to .165", mow 1-2 times a week, roll 2-3 days a week and stay on top of fungicides. No sand for me. I have really good coverage and only a few areas of concern--shade issues. I have begun lowering my HOC now weekly and will begin topdressing soon as well. I am just south of Atlanta

    Andy,

How much play do you get in the winter?

    John,
Very little play during the winter, especially this winter.
