Capping a tennis court with soil Cancel The title field is required!

   I was recently asked to bid a project that requires 5 inches of soil over an asphalt tennis court and then asked grow grass on it. Has anyone tried this before? Does any one have any thoughts? The area is 14000 square feet, mostly sunny, possibly irrigated if price is right. I am located in central Indiana. I am looking forward to any suggestions and thoughts. Thanks.

   We had areas where old cart paths got "buried" under soil and they always show up as dry spots when things start getting stressed. Something to consider depending on location.

   I wouldn't do it with out removing asphalt first. It will stress out every summer and they will blame you. Trust me!

   I had a small area (approximately 250 square ft +/-) of a parking lot that was covered with 6" of soil and grassed. The entire area was adequately irrigated and the turf performed fine AS LONG AS the irrigation worked as designed. We had one stretch of high temps that the irrigation in that area failed and a distinct line of the old parking lot became very apparent.

   It might be worth jackhammering the tennis court, leaving the rubble in place, and then capping with soil. Our course is a 6" sandcap on top of essentially non draining clay and it has been nothing but problems. Once the sandcap is saturated, the water has nowhere to go.
