What would you recommend for a bridge to span 50 feet? I have been asked to look into a "flat car bridge" made from an old rail car. Seems to me like it would rust down here a mile from the Gulf of Mexico. Any ideas from you guys would be helpful.

We made some from flat box culverts, don't know if they were quite 50 feet but I'm guessing they were. I have pictures somewhere of them using a crane to set them in.

We use extendable truck trailers. Check out machinerytrader.com. Many extend to 70 feet. Good for 50000 lbs. we deck with pressure treated wood and carpet. Work great

We installed this bridge earlier in the year. Very sturdy and looks great.

I've made bridges out of surplus piles that I got very cheaply from a construction site. The ones I used were 14 inch square with steel coil inside. They are designed for strength in the upright position, but are very strong for anything golf course related. If the material you choose is not long enough, consider centering your main unit and adding smaller wings on each side.
One thing you need to consider is liability. If you design it and build it, YOU assume the liability. Sometimes it might be best to have an engineer sign off on it.

    Thanks guys, keep it coming.

Mel, the 3x5 box culvert and 36" rounds are not off the table yet. I would love to span it with little to no piling support and leave the water visible if at all possible. If we do the culvert thing, we will most likely face it with river rock from the Austin area. We have several walls that were constructed with the same rock.

Richard, I'm in the CYA crowd. Anything like this will get a professional stamp of approval before I put it in. Too many good lawyers and greedy people out there.

    Daniel,,

I don't know if you are looking to save cash by doing something in house, but there's an outfit called Moosman Bridge that makes prefabricated rustic would assemblies in varying models that might fit your application. If nothing else, they have a lot of good pictures you could take to a builder locally that can help to outfit you with what you need. I haven't been on their website in a while, but I believe they have weight limitations for each style and so on.

Thanks Kyle. I've got an email in to them about a Grizzly. I'd love to keep it a wooden structure.

My apologies on the word "would" rather than using wood. Its been a long year.
