At my course there are about 5 black bears that frequent the property. Management is getting worried that one could potentially injure a golfer and or a staff member. They want me to write a bear policy to warn golfers about the dangers of approaching a black bear (i thought it would be obvious why you shouldn't approach a bear) and that we are taking the necessary steps to control these bears (ie: locking up garbage at night, bear bangers, etc).
I've so far tried contacting the local ministry office to see if they would come and trap them and take them away. They said they no longer do that due to government budget cuts. I've called the police and they said they would just fire shots in the air to scare them away. I told them not to bother, cause I have bear bangers that do the same thing.
What I need is a policy that shows that we are trying to control these bears before the last resort of shooting them.
Has anybody written something like this before, that i could use some ideas from.
Thanks again
