Has anyone tried discovery bermudagrass on bunker faces or anywhere on the golf course? How has it performed?

Although I have not used it, I have seen it planted in low traffic, low maintenance areas with good success. They are promoting this for areas that are difficult to maintain, such as bunker faces. Since it has natural dwarf characteristics it may take a while to get to rough length, but think of the lack of fly mowing you would have to do!

That being said, I would not plant it anywhere you need quick recovery. A friend has it in his yard, mowed at .750" with a walk mower. No kids or pets and it looks awesome!

Just like any other grass, the key is the grower. I tried some a couple of years ago on some mounds that we regularly had to flymo. The clean Discovery was great, but we would have random pieces that were not Discovery, which looked worse than the grass that was previously on the mounds. Grower here in SW Florida has since eliminated the stock. It was an intriguing grass, aggressive laterally but very little vertical growth. Great color as well.

I have it on one bunker face, it is mowed once a month and you cant tell when we skip it, I have it on couple of tees and they have gone as long as 6 weeks without mowing and no issues with scalping etc.. In fact the only reason the tees got cut then was due to operator error.

Im guessing you just blow the divots off then! how do the recoup from the divots?

We have some at a course in Memphis. Looked bad after this past winter, taking a while to recover. Hybrid bermuda adjacent to this turf is growing over the top of the Discovery. Slow to recover from post emerge applications to remove weeds. May have it's place but not in high traffic areas.
