We are in the transition zone, (SW MO) and are open all year weather permitting. We have 14 USGA Sand based greens and 4 native soil greens. They have always used aluminum cups since I have been here, the new set I got this past spring chipped and look like horrible (at least Peach thinks they do). Have used plastic at past facilities and they would look dirty but at least didn't have all the chips. I am thinking about going back to plastic, any pros or cons of either as it comes to wind issues and other possible disadvantages of plastic over aluminum?

    thanks, Mel

I've had plastic for the last many moons. My new course has aluminum. Kind of the same situation as you, in that I have some push up greens and some close to USGA specs. Personally I like the sound of aluminum when you make a putt. However some of the newer flagsticks don't fit in my aluminums very well (sloppy). So in other words Mel, I didn't answer your question. Just babbling after 4.6" of rain last night and another half or more so far today.

close your eyes and listen to it drop in and you'll use aluminum from now on.

I'm never making putts so that isn't a factor.

Aluminum with a plastic liner that can be changed works well.
I prefer plastic as the aluminum tends to perish and then cups stick a bit when being pulled.

We use the aluminum with the plastic insert. We get about two years out of the cups and change the liners every few months. The liners are like $1 a piece, so it's no big deal to change them when needed.

The plastic ones wear too quickly in the wind, and will break when a golfer slams the stick in the hole. The upside is they are much cheaper, so you can change them out more often.

We use aluminum with the plastic sleeve as well. I think they bring a little extra value to the facility. Whenever I am dropping 50 foot puts into a plastic cup and you don't get the 'ting' it just makes the entire experience feel cheap.
The aluminum cups tend to hold up better in the wind and with our freezing and thawing that goes on in Colorado
