Is anyone installing the 8 in. cup into your greens for special events? Any issues? Pros vs. Cons?
    Thanks.

I have 4 Big Cup events every year on all 18 holes. It was kind of a pain when I first started setting the cups but not a problem now. It takes a little while sometimes for the plug to fully recover. I will also set a big cup every now and then for an outing.

    Jeffrey,
We have been experimenting with the 8" and even the 15" for events. One issue that I had with the 8" was on a windy day the full length flagsticks would pull the cup out of the ground. They make smaller flagsticks that work much better. But the normal 8" cup cutter you can only go so deep too, so the flag would just blow the cup out. Also I tell the golfers to leave the flags in the cup when they put, or the flagstick can pull the cup out. Stick with the 8", 15" is more of a pain.

We have been doing 8" events for over 25 years, long before it was "cool" or "stupid" depending on your opinion. Some of our creative customers made some pretty nice stainless steel cups and a cutter long before todays versions.

My first response 18 years ago when I learned I had to install these cups was: "you gotta be kidding me!" I thought it was a sin to the history of the game and a stupid idea.

But I went along with it and now we have three big cup weekends a year with events on Sat and Sun each time. The August one is our biggest fundraiser of the year with a double shotgun. We have back to back (sat/sun) events so we get 6 big cup events a year with only having to put the cups in three times.

Now that I am used to it the install and replacement is easy but you need to pay attention. Key number one - We put the plugs in numbered tubs and all the dirt from that tub goes back in that hole. Key number two - Tamp the plugs flat and check them again in a couple days.

The par aid cups are only a couple inches deep and have made the job easier. We still use the homemade cutter although I have the new one. We have not had the problem with the cups pulling out. We have regular play on big cup weekends. Big cup flags are solid and regular cups are checkered.

I would be against a 15" event just due to the hassle of trying to pull a plug that big and the likelihood of it not healing well.

Personally I think it is ridiculous. If I made a hole in one on a 8 or 15 inch cup, I would be disappointed. I think it is paying for golf in the Golf Course clubhouse and playing golf at Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. JMHO.

As far as tipping the cups out because of the wind and the flagstick, we drilled a couple 3/8" holes in the 8" cup and then drove 10" landscape spikes in to the subgrade to help for this. My first time was a disaster, the three spikes has been the ticket. We use our normal 8' 3/4" tapered flags now, and everyone is happy. do I like those huge nails down there, no, but a scribble with a white paint pen, and they are hardly noticeable.
