I have a 6" Clow brand gate valve that needs a new rubber o-ring gasket. One of the top bonnet bolts rusted and allowed the gasket to seep out of the holding trough. Gasket not broken but it is stretched out about a half inch too big now . Can I freeze it to shrink it back?

It's already misshapen. Buy a new one.....if possible.

Call Clow and have them send you a parts breakout. I've successfully replaced the o-rings in the past by taking the valve apart while still attached to the pipe. It would help to order more parts than you would need ahead of time and just replace them all. Way cheaper and easier than replacing the valve. Of course, the bolts weren't rusted off and the valve itself was still in fairly good shape, just leaked.

There are "make your own" custom O ring kits if you can't find the original part. You might be able to cut and splice the old one. Replacing the entire valve is not that hard unless you have alot of thrust block to break up. Couldn't have happened at a better time. Just getting hot here in DC. Kenneth Ingram, UMD.

I do hope that everyone realizes that I was speaking about buying a new gasket, not a new valve. My apologies if anyone read into my comment that the valve itself had become misshapen. Although, I do suppose that a novice employee experimenting with a blowtorch could have caused some deformity.

    To the valve.

had an issue last week with a 6" AFC gate valve. the bolts and nuts simply rusted out and let the bonnet blow off. The bolts and nuts were zinc coated and not stainless. now am looking at having to dig up all of the valves and replace the nuts and bolts. Course was only constructed 11 years ago. not like they have been in the ground for a long time.
