Completing a grow in, fairways consist of Barenbrug HGT Rye/Blue. Seeded early last September, course is built on a CRP field in western North Dakota. Have two fairways that were a bit on the light side with top soil and are a little thin. Have a little weed encroachment and was wondering if It would be worth the risk of any yellowing if I sprayed with two weeks to go until the opening. Have a one day window where temps are going to be cool but then backup to upper 80's. Small budget facility green fees will only be $42 with cart. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Don't have a lot of $$$$ to counteract any yellowing or further thinning. I was thinking of holding off until this fall.

The grass that's there should be mature enough to handle spraying broadleaves. Break out the sprayer.

What we use this time of year is straight dicamba (Banvel) at 5-8oz per acre, very cost effective and takes out a majority of weeds, really nukes clover. Have used it at an all bent facility and mixed it into every other spray on fairways with zero burn. A 2.5 gallon jug easily lasts an entire year down here in KC. I actually sprayed some 2 weeks ago and had great results with very minimal yellowing. Best of luck!

Just finished a grow in myself. Seeded similiar mix fairways last July and sprayed for weeds in May with great results and zero problems. I think you will be fine to spray.

    Ryan,

I sprayed a fairly young seeded area last fall with 2,4-D and had a bit of injury from it. Similar situation, had a little western ND cool spell, then hot right after. Didn't seem to hurt the KBG as much as our fine fescues, but I decided to not spray again when temps will be in the upper 80's. Switched to using Drive or a generic quinclorac for summer months.

With a majority of golfers, green is the only color they care about. Don't necessarily know many weeds from grass in general. Two weeks before opening, everyone could tell you it will be fine but if its not, you have a little overlap, it turns 90 instead of 85 yada, yada, yada, spray your weeds in the fall. You have a lot of time to kill stuff.
