I have been instructed to setup a 15" cup tournament. Anyone doing this have any surprises as they are cutting the cups or replacing them? Heading into winter here in the AZ mountains, little concerned about staring at 15" circles all winter. Do the cups have any issues staying in on windy days? I had to put the 8" cup extremely deep to hold the 8' flagstick. Also any brilliant ideas for storing the extra green I will now being carrying around with all the 15" plugs?

Quick side note to the CEO of Taylormade, would also be fun to grow the game by selling your newest driver for $50, and not $500. grrrr

Don, we set up the 15" cups on our sister golf course and the experiment lasted about 2 weeks. No one wanted to play the bigger cup for a "fun" tournament or regular play and comments ran from "silly" to "insulting". We have since sent the package and hole cutter to the manufacturer.

Someone else on the forum suggested that the "plugs" fit nicely into a 5 gal. plastic bucket I believe. In our case we cut down the flag pole to 5 ft. and installed a new ferrule for two reasons: wind and to better distinguish the bogus hole as we maintained the regulation holes on same greens.

    Don,

Back in September I helped set up a First Tee fundraising tournament at a neighboring 18 hole Par 3 course with 8 15" cup holes which were worth $1000 for a hole in one. (64 players, 1 hole in one and they only took $750 to remain amateur).

We got the Par Aide cutter and cups, found out to be able to mow over them you need a cap (also Par Aide) so if you want to leave them in for any length of time you would need that also. Just stored the plugs in a cart for the day and replaced them after the event. Replacing them was not as easy as a normal size but it went quite well and using a grave tamper was the key to getting things back level. An extra 5 minutes per hole replaced vs a 4".

My opinion, was ok for a one time event but certainly would not want to do on a regular basis and certainly not on 18 holes, should be just for a special few holes, maybe just a/the par 3's or 5's. It took an extra two weeks (a month total) for the plugs to disappear.

Before buying the "stuff", see about sharing it and expenses with other courses for fun events. TFT of MT bought it all and will rent it to facilities to use for their "fun/special" events.

Our golf pro finally talked me into doing the 15 inch cup for an event last summer. My two assistants put them on nine holes which took about 2 and a half hrs? to complete and a at least a couple more hours to put back the plugs and regular cups. There were a few that said that they were fun but not that many. I can see that maybe increasing the hole size from 4 1/4" to say 5 inches or 6 inches max would make it easier for higher hcps but 15 INCHES!!!! come on!! In my opinion this could maybe work a little bit at a higher end club with a par three course but not at a public course where the labor budget and overall budget is tight anyway. Its too bad that some architects make the courses so hard to play and maintain these days that now we are trying finds ways to get people to play! Here is a novel idea: LOWER GREEN FEES AND MAKE THE COURSES SHORTER AND EASIER ( LESS BUNKERS ) not 15 inch cups.
Just my opinion. Please share yours
    Steve

    15" cup...MAN!
The next thing you'll be doing is installing stairs to help them get out of the bunkers

15" cups are one of the dumbest things I have ever heard of. Really sad to see this gaining momentum. Just my opinion.

Quick response, had the event and after the brand new cup cutter broke on the second plug, I will be trying to never cut another 15" cup. The plug probably weighed 60 lbs and was very difficult to replace. Members were not in favor. Maybe just an automatic 1 putt to make the game easier. Just amazing what we want to do so we don't have to practice and try to get better at something.
