I am a Tiger fan and I'm happy with his win.
My question is would this help the industry?
Especially if he continues playing well next year?

Did Tiger actually help the industry at any point in his career? I know we were all helping he would but I am not sure he brought many extra players to the game. I know he certainly brought more viewers to television but was there much of a spike in new golfers to the game?

Of course he helped the game. And Mel, yes I do believe he will help bring golf back from the dead, if he keeps winning.

And with that win, guess who is probably already the favorite to win the 2012 Masters.

    I think he hurt it.

He did indeed bring more people to the game, no doubt. Developers noticed this and begin building new courses at a breakneck speed. Just as with any new hobby, after a few years, participation drops off further reducing the number of players. That, coupled with the economy and the amount of available time to play the game, has reduced the number of players even more. The result is a golf market that was overbuilt with not enough players to fill tee sheets. Now we are all stuck in this position cutting budgets, laying off staff and, taking reductions in pay and benefits and being terminated ourselves along with reduced green fees to get people in the door to just break even. So, did Tiger ever really "help" the game?

    No.

Tiger caused golf to be overbuilt? Come now. Tiger brought attention to the game which brought more players to courses. This is a course owners dream. If you are looking to point fingers, a good place to start is the National Golf Foundation, not Tiger. The NGF criss-crossed the country touting the virtues and profit of course ownership by spewing ridiculous ROI numbers; remember "Build it and they will come"? Heck our own association presented a seminar, which I attended, discussing how and why we all should build a golf course. The owners and developers were hooked lock-stock-and-barrel. They built and built and now we are left holding the bag. But to suggest it is Tiger's fault is a huge stretch IMO.

I actually thought the course building boom hit before Tiger became a hit. (early 90's - Tiger arrived in late 96 and 97 was his first big year? I could be wrong though).

Did see that he donated his winnings yesterday to his foundation.
