Wrestling has been dropped from the 2020 Olympics. The IOC added competitions to the coming Olympic games which means some sport is on the chopping block, they can only squeeze so many sports into the Olympics. The modern pentathlon and field hockey were thought to be the most at risk but Wrestling was removed in a secret ballot vote. Wrestling is the oldest of the Olympic competitions dating back to the very first Olympics.

At first I was surprised by this move. Wrestling is a mainstay program around the world at all levels from elementary school age through and beyond college age participants. The pentathlon is virtually non-existant at any level other than at the Olympics and field hockey is even more rare than lacrosse. But after second thought I'm sure PC-itus came into play with the IOC's decision.

Probably all about tv ratings. I'm sure they know how many people watch wrestling during the Olympics on tv, and there must not be many.

I also heard they're considering adding a "roller sport," whatever that might be. If anything, it better be Women's Roller Derby, because I won't be watching a bunch of guys in short shorts roller blading on the beach boardwalks of Rio, I promise you that.

Wrestling certainly isn't fun to watch but it is a historical event, dating to the beginning of the Olympic spirit. How does rythmic (or however you spell it) swimming make sense. How about some of those stupid gymnastic events with ribbons or balls? I for one don't understand why baseball, softball or golf fit in with Olympic sports. Maybe they should dump several of those unique sports and stick more with track and field and some key selected events that people around the world actually participate in!

Yeah, you're probably right. Badminton and fencing always have me on the edge of seat. My fingers are crossed for yard jarts and beer-pong getting in the 2024 games.

I suppose it's ok to have rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, baseball, and the unnamed 'roller sport' etc. if they don't cost a traditional sport like wrestling its place. As much as I like golf, it doesn't really belong there, nor does tennis. For that matter, any sport that has it's own championship that is more important than the olympics doesn't belong.

Kind of difficult to get viewers for wrestling when it airs at like 6am in the middle of summer...
