So, we've received word of a new maintenance shop thats been approved by our board and I was hoping you guys could upload a few photos of your shops. I'd like to get some ideas of what works well and what doesn't as once the the ball starts rolling on this project i'd like to have my input on the project ready and laid out so we can get things done right the first time. The shop will be approxiamately 30' x 60' and will have 2 lifts. There will also be a seperate parts room/cage. Thanks for the help!

Hodd DeHays was the golf course maintenance shop guru back in my day. I believe he worked for Jack Nicklaus. You might do a little research on him and facilities he has designed.

Good morning - this post caught my eye on the homepage this morning. There is a webcast available On Demand titled Plan Now to Update Your Turf Care Center that Mike Vogt, CGCS, taught for us last spring. It has some good details along the lines of your request. And you can earn education points for watching at the same time!

Read more and enroll from the page here:

The handouts shown on the intro page are still available for download from the same place. Hope that helps. Lisa

In my experience, an 1,800ft2 shop is not large enough by the time you start adding offices, storage rooms, shelving, bathrooms, two lifts, etc... Draw it on paper and then start measuring equipment to see how much you actually need. It's probably out of your control at this point, but I would explain the need for a larger shop.

I was in a 40' x 80' shop at one point in my career and the majority of the equipment was stored outside. What wasn't stored outside had to be pulled out every day so the mechanic had room to work. And then of course, everything had to be pulled back in at the end of the day again.

i have 5,000 sq ft.... not even close for what we do.

We pull stuff out... we pull stuff in... every. single. day.

Draw out what you want, then figure out what you have to have, I could use another 2,500 sq ft. I didn't have input for my building, I'd done things differently. Lack of door sizing, 10 by 10 doesn't do it.

    Good luck.

the shop will be just that.. a shop. Equipment & chemical storage, offices, breakroom, yada yada yada are all getting their own buildings. at most, 1-2 rooms will be built in to the shop which would be a secured parts room/cage and a tiny office where i can keep manuals and my computer for reference and maintenance tracking as well as catch a few zz's during downtime

Our shop is 80X30, when subtracting the parts room and my office it would be about 60X30. We just did install a second lift. So it is possible to have enough room for 2 lifts. We also have other tech's in the shop working without it being too cramped.

If that's the case, you should be fine. Any room for an insulated grinder room?

the whole shop will be insulated (heat and a/c included) and our old bernhard grinders will be replaced with newer enclosed units
