We are looking for a trimmer that will last more than two or three years. We have Toro,Echo, kawasaki,Husquvarna,Tanaka,Maruyama the toro, husquvarna are old but are the better of all of them but are very old. The problem we are having is finding a trimmer with any power. I need to know if anyone has any suggestions on a brand that holds up to a lot of use. Thanks for any ideas.

We had really good success with Shindaiwa, but no representation of the brand locally any more. I have switched to Stihl and been OK so far. They are pricey. I think more than the brand, you just need to make sure you get into the contractor/professional models and not the lower tier/homeowner models. We ran into similar issues with chainsaws.

We run all Stihl here among both landscape companies and three golf courses. Combined this is over 400 pieces of two-cycle equipment. Our landscape company uses them 40 hours a week with hardly any downtime. In other words, they run for hours on end with only being shut off for fuel (talk about a boring job!). We use the FS 90 R string trimmers and the FC 90 stick edgers.

In the end, I think it all boils down to fuel. We switched to Ethanol a few years back and it was disastrous. Non-stop issues with some days half the fleet of two-cycle equipment being down for repairs. We went back to regular non-Ethanol and have had very limited issues since.

I've had decent luck with RedMax, Husquvarna and Stihl. Not sure how they compare on pricing. But I agree that you'll never get more than a few years out of them if you go with the cheaper small versions. Just pick a brand to go with and load up on parts so you only have one box of miscellaneous parts and you can swap parts around.
