i have a Kubota D1105 diesel engine from a toro sidewinder. during teardown for a re build i noticed
the timing is off by two teeth. The timing marks are clear to see and all gears have marks but all are off
in the same direction by two. This engine does not appear to have ever been down, looks factory assemble
and ran well until now at 5600 hrs. (overheated and broke a ring)
Did the factory miss stamp the marks ,was it timed off to meet emissions. My experience tells me
that a diesel needs to be timed just right to run unlike a gas engine that usually is more forgiving.
looking for your thoughts thanx tw

Each of the gears timing mark should be perfectly aligned. The actual ignition timing comes from proper installation of the injection pump and correct shims. You will need to follow the steps in the manual for ignition timing, there should be marks on the flywheel for TDC and depending on what type of timing/engine setup it is there will some marks on the side of the flywheel when at TDC that will let you know if you're advancing or retarding the timing, this will also require fuel measurements from the injection pump at certain positions that lets you know you have proper timing. If engine is in unit then there should be a sight glass on the side to view timing marks.
