Sounds like the PTO belt is worn or loose. This is the belt behind the seat, next to the engine, attached to the PTO clutch. You might also want to check the bearings on the belt pulley, as we have had those go bad as well and it caused the belt to slip. It's a bear to change, since you have to disconnect the drive shaft, but it can be done.
