My mechanic recently encountered an issue with the "Bed Knife Bars" (bkb) of our new LF570.

For starters we have "Foley" grinders, where the bkb attach to a magnet.

The width of the bkb's demands that the bkb's attach to the "bar itself" not the actual bedknife (like a Toro 6500).

Our issue is that there is a substantial difference ( 25-75/1000ths) in the cast from one side to the other. BKB is not "snug" to the magnets because of the "untrue" nature of the BKB.

We are getting them ground, but having to do a little guess work with the set up of grinder.

Anyone ever encounter this? If so we would appreciate your thoughts on tackling this issue.

    Thanks,

PS....109 degrees outside the mechanic's bay yesterday in downtown PHX!!!

Put some shimstock under the bar to hold it firmly in place.

When I ground Toro 6500 I just mounted the bar spaced evenly on the magnets and set it up just as I would any other knife that would be ground on the Foley and never had an issue. I don't run Jac, but I don't see why you couldn't just set up like any other knife, like I mentioned above, I've done 6500 knives with no issues.

Sorry, mistook what you were saying, and I certainly see your issues now that there are pics to look at. It is possible to mount a dial indicator to the motor head of the grinder and position the knife on the magnets and adjust your knife off the shoulder bolts from end to end eliminating the feet for the particular grind. After all the most accurate point to grind a bedknife is from where it will mount back into the reel/frame.

If a knife comes out of the box with .060 of an inch off and you set the knife on the feet and adjust from end to end you're still .060 off. If you set a knife up based on where it will fit back in the reel housing, the shoulder/shoe bolts, you will end up grinding away at one side and end up with a perfectly straight knife. Might be worth a try for you. I've use a dial indicator with a mount on the Foley in the past for grinding knives and it worked out pretty well for us. We use SIP now and everything sets up off the shoe bolts.

    Thank you for your comments.

We are taking the bedbars to a machine shop and "mill off" a portion of the bar so that the magnets have a clean shot at grasping the bedknife.

    Take care.
