We have a 5210 John Deere and the clutch releases at the very top of travel and slips with a loaded bucket going up hill. We split the tractor and the pad looks bran new with white writing still on it. The pto pad shows a little wear. A new clutch to put in is like $800 plus for the whole unit and now I am wondering if we are missing some adjustment either inside or outside. Not too familiar with a double clutch set up and a little over our head on this one and was looking for some help.

I would have tried to adjust clutch before taking it apart. It sounds the clutch is in good shape.
I would have my local dealer come and check it out now that you have it apart for a second opinion.
May be something you are not seeing. Good luck.

Sure where were you last week? That's kind of what we are thinking too, the front clutch looks bran new but the pto clutch shows a little wear. Just wondering if the pto clutch could affect the front clutch. Then question gets to adjust or replace part or all.

There are springs with locking nuts on inside we thought maybe too tight putting pressure on pto clutch which may have put pressure on backside of front clutch causing slippage under load.

Your PTO clutch kicks in before you drive clutch does. I would measure thickness of pto clutch and see
if local dealer has a new pto clutch they could measure to see if yours is out of service limit. It may not be a
bad idea to change it since you have it apart. Your dealer can tell you if pto clutch can effect the drive clutch.

It could be that the spring on the pressure plate are broken or weak

Thats kind of what we are wondering they don't look broke but could be weak or adjusted wrong they have lock nuts on them. In hindsight we should have measured the gap before we took it apart.

I had a 5210 that had same problems last year. I adjusted the rod from the pedal about 1" and everything works just as it should.

Thanks Paul, I was a bit afraid someone would say that I suppose putting it all back together and trying would be best since we still are in winter here. It had play but only about a quarter inch maybe eighth which would be fine on a car or truck. At over $1000 just for parts it would be worth a try all a it could hurt is our pride.

If everything looks ok, I would not be afraid to put together and try adjusting rod. Our 5210 had about 6,000 hour on it and there was very little play in the pedal. After adjusting the rod and linkage, tractor ran like new. It would climb hills with a load and not hesitate and pto worked just as it should. Before you put back together make for sure there is no sign of oil getting on the clutch and make for sure the disks don't have a glaze on them. I had a Deere 1070 that was slipping and thought was clutch and came to find out had small hydraulic leak that found its way into the housing and onto the clutch disk and they had to be replaced. I worked on another tractor for a friend and their clutch had been slipping so long there was a glossy glaze that developed on the clutch disk and pressure plates. I used a die grinder with abrasive pad and gently removed the glazed areas and put tractor back together, adjusted linkage and ran perfect. Unfortunately I have torn tractors apart and found the disks and pressure plates had to be replaced. If clutch needs replaced, I recommend finding an automotive clutch shop and get price from them for either rebuilding yours or of they can find you one elsewhere. I just replaced clutch in a ProGator last year and John Deere wanted $2,300 for complete clutch, I found one on Ebay with exact same stamping numbers for $400 and it works great.
    Good Luck
