Does anyone know why a 5040 will not shut off with the switch? we replaced the switch and same problem. tried pulling the plug on seat switch and still does not shut off. Eventually it will shut off on its own but sometimes 5+ minutes after you turn key off.

There is a blue wire on the left front side of your engine. It is attached to a terminal screw on the shroud. This connection is the ground wire for your coils. The blue wire goes back to your key switch and when in the off position grounds the coils to kill the spark. Sounds like this circuit is disconnected. Your fuel solenoid must be working because it stays running for a few minutes meaning it runs until the fuel in the carb bowl is depleted.

We once had a range cart that got a short from the rain started itself and since was slightly turned ran in circles out on the driving range for about 15 minutes.

John thanks for the reply. sorry but I am not seeing a blue wire or any wire attached to the shroud. The only wire I see that has me wondering is there is a violet wire back by the starter that is not attached to anything. it has a female attachment on the end of it but it just hangs there. we cannot see any spot where it may hook to at this point. The wiring diagram shows it runs from the magnito to the switch and tees off going to the seat switch. it also shows a violet wire coming off the main regulator wire running through a fuse to the light switch, but this should be towards the middle to front of the unit. The wiring diagram does not show a blue wire on it either.

John thanks again. pulled rake off the back and had my equipment tech clean whole engine to better see and they had a small tab coming off the frame where the violet wire was supposed to be. all working fine now.
