Looking for some feedback on the Toro Edgemax bedknives for use on greens reels. Good? Bad? Does the bedknife edge last longer? Same quality of cut? Worth the extra cost?? ETC...
My fairway mower has them on but I was wondering about a greens mower which needs a more precise cut.

We have been using them on Greens only for two years now. They will stay sharper longer than the original. The cost is high but so is time. We have not used them for the first couple of cuts after Aerification sand reels are for that. For normal topdressing they the work well. They take light touch up on the grinder easily, but depending on the grinder may require you changing your stone. We currently using the Greenlee Diamond stone that works well for the hardened surface of the bedknife. They are prone to chipping damage where chunks will come out of the bedknife but that happens with such hardened steel.

We tried one set on our greens mower a few years ago. Personally, I wasn't as impressed as I thought I might be considering how much I like the edgemax knives on our fairway mower. I don't know if its still a problem, but I had heard a few guys had problems with them cracking.

We use them on all cutting units except for our sand mowers that go out shortly after a heavy topdress. I think they work great and maintain a niece cutting edge longer than our standard knife. As John said the cost is quite a bit higher the time it saves is worth it to me. We verticut today at -.100 up and back down the same pass then mowed at .130 with groomers set at .065 with the out front brush down. They mowed up and back as well and all machines still cut a single sheet of paper when checked in. If you have enough repair and maintenance budget to purchase them you save some time on grinding. The Borazon stone if I spelled it correctly I believe works the best and doesn't take any longer to grind than the standard knife. Cracking is a problem since the greens knife is solid and doesn't have an insert on the edge like a fairway edge max bedknife. Over tightening the screws will cause it to crack. Haven't heard or had one crack for any other reason but anything is possible with the right circumstances. Works for us.
