During this past season I noticed poor cut from the front reels on a couple holes. The front reels looked to be spinning slower than the rear reels.

I checked the settings under the seat and they were both the same and hadn't been changed. I turned the knob for the front reels and it was stuck and had to move it back and forth to loosen it and get it back to the proper setting. I had to force it a bit and couldn't get the knob to travel through the entire settings without quite a bit of effort.

Starting to do my winter service on the mower and the knob is still difficult to move and get it to move through all of the settings.

Is the issue a faulty selector knob???
    Inside the hydraulic block???

    Brad,

I have had issues before with the front reel speed being different then the rear reel speed. Now the cartridge valve was the issue. As stated in the Service manual the cartridge valves in MSV2 and MSV1 can be switched for testing purposes. You will just need to remove electric coil from each valve and switch cartridges. if your problem changes from front to rear then replace cartridge vale.

Same as Brad . Split O ring on one of ours was the culprit.

Back off the bedknives and run them in the shop for a while, if you feel one that is hotter than the rest its a bad reel motor. Otherwise you should be able to block the reel and with the drain case line off measure the amount that comes out in 1 minute, do the same to the rest and look up how many ounces per minute equal good or bad reel motor.

    Regards,

A few years back I ran into similar problems with my 5400 toro fairway mower. Come to find out one of the ports in the hydraulic pump went bad. Replaced the pump and it worked. I would suggest finding a hydraulic tester and find out what your psi outputs are before replacing the pump. You can also take the pump to a hydraulic place and they can test it.

On the 5410 the two easiest test are switching the MSV1 and MSV2 and checking the case drain on the hydraulic motor. You don't anything but some simple hand tools, a catch can and measuring glass to see how much fluid you get per 1 minute. You can look up the drain spec for reel motors on-line if you don't have a service manual. After that you need test equipment or take it to someone who does.
