Our Toro 5410 fairway machine has had a bad QOC issue for the past couple of weeks. After mowing, the after cut appearance is a wavy look, the waves are very close together. Almost has the appearance of the reels not spinning fast enough to keep up with the speed of the mower. The back two reels mow perfect no matter how thick the grass is. Our reel speed dials are opened all the way, we tried switching the reel speed dials to see if one was bad but still have the same issue with the front cutting units.
My mechanic is putting in new reels as we speak since the old ones were getting to the end of there useful life. Any other ideas? My only other thought is there is a hydraulic valve that is not opening all the way.

Turn them on in the shop and watch them spin, we just had the same issue. Turns out one of the reel motors had a problem. Front and rear reel motors are on different circuits. Ours was the front left motor (looking at front on machine) causing all the front motors to slow. Moved that motor to other end and the left and center ran fine and right (previous bad from left) was now the only one slow.

Must be an epidemic, I have one that started doing that, opened the motor up and found the black seals that lay over the other seals were in a multitude of pieces. installed a new seal kit since everything else looked good and it lasted 3 mowing's, put the motor on one of the rear units and it is still doing the same which means thankfully I'll only have to replace the motor and not the parts in the hydraulic valve block.

You may be getting the famous 3-2 cut. You can try adjusting the rear compensation springs on the back to life arms. Each movement is equal to 5lbs, so if they are cutting lower increase the the spring tension, if they appear to be higher the decrease the the spring tension. These machines are notorious for these sort of mowing problems / patterns. I have even been running them with those springs disconnected. Not saying that this is your problem, but after verifying reel speeds this is where you would want to start.

    Andy,

Thanks for the guide, that could come in handy down the road.

turned out to be a pressure relief valve that was malfunctioning (svm 2 ??).
