I have a great question for you Professional Equipment techs. We purchase our mower about 8 years ago and rebilt the reels about 3 years ago.

One of the first things I noticed on the Toro mower compared to our Jacbosen 3400 was the reels were notground the same way. Our Jacobsens mowers reels had a pointed edge to the reel where as it wore in over time it would become flat and then we would simply tear them down and regrind them again. I had been doing this for almost 20 years until we purchased the toro unit which the angle of the grind was reversed compared to the Jac unit.

I find myself currently trying to grind the Toro reels on an old Foley grinder, and trying to match how they came from the factory. Can anyone explain to me why to Toro reels are reversed from the way I had always been grinding reels?

If nothing else I simply would like to know why they did their reels like this. Is it actually better? did they change due to the newer spin grinders?

    Thanks for any input.

[attachment=0">IMG_2412.JPG[/attachment">Most reels I have ground look the same in the fact that they either had factory relief (back cut )and a spin grind .This pick shows a factory John Deere reel ( New)it has a ground relief (large flat area )and a spin grind (small area )That's how it should look . Occasionally (rarely)you may see a reverse helix reel but the grind still faces the same way to the bed knife . I know some Jacs have a factory relief cut and you can get away with just a spin grind . Their are quit a few course that just spin grind . I prefer to do both . To each his own .

I'm not sure exactly what you are saying. Can you clarify?

The Toro's grind and drive from right and left sides but have the same helix, where Jacobsen has a right a left-hand reel and drive from both sides, causing the reverse helix. Helix is the direction of the leading end the ramps on to the bedknife first. In the Deere pic you have the thick part of the reel stock, then the relief area with a 90 to 95% relief grind and about 5% leading edge. Deere drives from right and left sides but all have the same helix. Jacobsen has the same grinds but then they have a milled cut behind the relief that makes their blades seem thinner, and by the time it reaches the fat portion the reels, they are usually ready for replacement.
