    Hello All-
My name is Jeff Buelow at Anchorage Golf Course in Anchorage, AK. At the end of last season we started having an issue with one of our Jake Greens King IV Plus we use for the tees. The engine runs fine in transport but when the reels are engaged the engine bogs down to the point of stalling. Our mechanic drained the hydro fluid and replaced with new. No change, still bogs. I was thinking about flushing the hydro lines. As anyone done this before? If so, what did you flush it with? Just hydro or some kind of mineral? The next step I was thinking was to take the valves off, check and clean them, and see if that helps. Maybe a valve is not opening all the way causing back pressure to bog the engine.
The units are about 15 years old and have been used in a high sand environment but I've seen no sign of sand in the lines.
Anyone have experience with this problem?

    Thanks,
    Jeff Buelow

If you feel strongly it is a hydraulic issue, try engaging one reel at a time to see if there is a restriction in only one of the circuits. It could show you which segment in the valve body to start with.

I have seen a few governor issues with these machines as well. If the governor is out of adjustment or the internal parts of the governor are worn, it may not be able to respond to the additional load of the reels being turned on.

    Bret-

My mechanic has been looking for info on the governor in the manual and can't find it anywhere. Our next step is to call Jake. Any info on where it is located on the machine?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

There is a sticker or plate on the engine. Should be model, type, and code #'s. You will need all 3 to get the correct info for the engine.

Just looked back at your first post. This info could be stamped into the flywheel cover along one of the edges by where the small bolts hold it to the engine block.

If you can't find the manual, I likely have it in a PDF. Shoot me an email and I'll forward it to you.

The info you will need isn't in the Jac Manual. I'm thinking you have a Briggs???

Found the problem. It's a Vanguard 18HP and it was only running on one cylinder. Fixed and ready to roll.
    Thanks for your feedback.

I just logged in to ask same question, but for a Toro triplex. I have swapped out the hydraulic valve assembly and still the same problem. I even replaced governor spring. Tomorrow morning I am looking at spark plugs, coils, and compression. Thanks a lot.

    Nicholas-

We disconnected one spark plug at a time. The Jake has two. When we disconnected one the engine died. That told us the problem. Good luck!
