We are accumulating fuel in oil reservoir. I can occasionally see some fuel flow into the carberator when the key is turned on, but nothing excessive. How is the fuel getting into the oil? Is the fuel shut-off soleniod failing or could it just need gaskets?

First check and make sure your choke is open completely. Next check your spark plugs and gap, also check your air filter and pre-cleaner to make sure your getting max air flow. These are the first of the easy steps to check.

If you have done any carburetor work lately, or even if you haven't, you may want to check your float and make sure it is seating/closing all the way. I would also check my fuel pressure and flow. Flow should be 10oz per 30 seconds and pressure @ 1.45 psi. High fuel pressure with a bad seat or weak float spring could push the float open causing your problem.

if the machine has a manual rather than an electric fuel pump, fuel can be pushed through a bad diaphragm as happened in one of our older machines.

We have had a problem with this in the past. What we found was that the operator would leave the machine without setting the brake or leaving the PTO in the on position & the safeties on the machine turn off the engine but the fuel pump continues to run. Operators were leaving the machine to remove markers from a set of tees...This could range from a couple of minutes to several if a break was necessary to wait on golfers to tee off The overloading of fuel with the engine not running eventually worked into the oil pan. Hope this helps.

We have the same problem with our mower. We get so much gas in the oil that the oil comes out and covers the back unit. Usually happens at startup after sitting all night. JD dealer says to check the float seat. I would be interested if anyone else has had this problem.
